Learning how to drive safely doesn't stop after passing the 'L' test. You can further your driving education by taking a PASS PLUS course. Not only will you develop better driving skills but it could save you money on your car insurance!
Pass plus consists of six seperate training modules covering Town driving, all-weather driving, driving out of town, night driving, driving on dual carraigeways and driving on motorways. There is no test to sit but you must complete and show good understanding of each module before receiving your PASS PLUS certificate. Many insurance companies are now offering discounts to drivers who have completed PASS PLUS, sometimes as much as the equivalent of one year no claims bonus! Training must be taken within one year of passing your 'L' test. Details of each module are shown below:
Night driving
The practical session covers topics such as:
- Correct speed;
- Safe stopping distances;
- Seeing and being seen in:
- Rain
- Sleet, Snow and Ice
- Mist and Fog
- Bright sunshine
- Skidding:
- Causes and prevention
- Correcting slow-speed skids
- Braking on poor surfaces
- Aquaplaning
The practical session covers topics such as:
- The importance or the correct use of headlights;
- Adjusting to dark conditions;
- Judging speed and distances;
- Correct use and care of lights;
- Dealing with dazzle;
- Road users who can be difficlut to see;
- Parking
Driving on dual carraigeways
The practical session covers topics such as:
- Effective observations;
- Use of mirrors and checking blind areas;
- Judgement and planning well ahead;
- Safe seperation distances;
- Joining and leaving dual carraigeways;
- Lane discipline;
- Overtaking;
- Correct use of speed
The practical session covers topics such as:
- Observations, judgement and awareness;
- Eye contact;
- Consideration for vulnerable road users;
- Keeping space around your car.
Driving on motorways
Driving out of town
The practical session covers topics such as:
- Planning journeys in advance;
- Joining and leaving motorways;
- Using slip roads properly and effectively;
- Safe speeds for varying circumstances;
- Effective all-round observations;
- Signs, signals and markings;
- Overtaking and lane discipline;
- Courtesy towards other road users;
- Motorway fatigue;
- Breakdown procedures;
- Use of lights and hazard warning lights;
- Debris on the motorway;
- Crosswinds
The practical session covers topics such as:
- Observation of the road ahead;
- Making progress safely;
- Bends, hills, uneven roads, dead ground;
- Keeping a safe distance from the vehicle ahead;
- Overtaking safely;
- Being aware of and showing consideration for:
- Pedestrians, horse riders and animals in the
road
- Farm entrances
- Slow-moving vehicles
